Starlink is reportedly moving toward a mobile‑phone service that could deliver speeds of up to 150 Mbps. The idea was announced by two senior SpaceX officials at various industry conferences, according to the Tuesday edition of “Handelsblatt”. Jack Rockaway, who heads SpaceX’s government‑relations team, said the target speed might be reached in “a few years”.
The concept of linking SpaceX’s satellite constellation directly to ordinary smartphones has been on the table for a while. This latest development lifts the vision to a new stage, potentially posing fresh competition for traditional mobile carriers. The “Direct‑To‑Cell” service is also expected to play a key role in SpaceX’s IPO plans for later this year.
