Reports of antifeminist and queer-hostile incidents surged last year, according to a newly released annual report. The reporting center, operated by the non-profit organization “Lola for Democracy” with funding from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, documented 558 cases ranging from physical assault and hate campaigns to arson.
The report, detailed in a recent article by “Der Spiegel”, indicates a diverse range of targets. Fifty-nine incidents were directed at organizations dedicated to feminist, queer advocacy, or violence protection. Events such as Christopher Street Day parades experienced 102 reported incidents.
Additionally, private businesses known as gathering places for feminist and queer communities, including cafes and bars, were repeatedly targeted with vandalism, arson and attacks on staff.
Approximately 30 percent of reported cases involved digital attacks. The report specifically highlighted online networks where individuals exchanged information and shared imagery related to sexualized violence against women.
While acknowledging the data doesn’t provide a statistically representative overview, the reporting center suggests the significant increase in reported incidents – compared to the previous year – demonstrates growing awareness and sensitivity regarding antifeminist ideologies and actions. The organization defines antifeminism as a political ideology and strategy opposing gender and sexual diversity as well as equality.
