Germany’s SPD Calls for Tougher Stance on Israel

Ahead of Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, a leading voice within the Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary group has called for a more assertive stance towards Israel. Speaking to “Der Spiegel”, Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s spokesperson for foreign policy, expressed grave concern over reported Israeli government plans for a complete occupation of Gaza. He cautioned that the realization of such a plan would substantially exacerbate the existing humanitarian crisis.

Ahmetovic warned of the potential for a wider regional conflict, emphasizing that an escalation would likely result in increased hunger and a rise in casualties. He further noted a significant risk to the ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages, a point reiterated by former hostages and families of those currently held. He argued that these developments necessitate a shift in approach from the German government.

Simetje Möller, the SPD parliamentary group’s deputy leader, previously outlined potential courses of action in an internal letter to members. These options included the suspension of the European Association Agreement with Israel, the implementation of direct sanctions against right-wing Israeli cabinet members and a halt to arms exports to Israel. Möller also suggested that the recognition of a Palestinian state should not be considered off-limits. The internal discussions focus on strategies to meaningfully address the evolving situation and potential risks associated with current policies.
