Germany Urges Renewed Commitment to Nuclear Non-Proliferation

Marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has underscored the critical importance of upholding and strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In a statement released Wednesday, Wadephul emphasized that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.

The awarding of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to the Japanese organization “Nihon Hidankyo” was highlighted as a significant gesture, recognizing the invaluable memory work undertaken by the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Wadephul affirmed Germany’s commitment, alongside France and the United Kingdom, to consistently advocate for the preservation and reinforcement of the treaty.

Acknowledging the current geopolitical landscape, the Foreign Minister observed that certain nations, referencing Russia’s actions, are challenging the established nuclear order and global security through tactics perceived as nuclear coercion. He asserted that enhancing deterrence and defense capabilities is crucial for safeguarding peace and security, while simultaneously reaffirming Germany’s dedication to the international order.
