Union Berlin and 1. FC Magdeburg both secured decisive victories in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Friday.
Union Berlin delivered a dominant performance, defeating FC Gütersloh with a resounding 5-0 scoreline. Robert Skov opened the scoring for the visitors in the 19th minute with a well-placed free kick. Leopold Querfeld extended the lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute following a corner and Danilho Doekhi quickly added a third goal just before halftime (43rd minute). Andrej Ilic further solidified Union’s advantage with a goal in the 78th minute and Woo-Yeong Jeong completed the rout with a goal in added time (90+4 minute).
Meanwhile, 1. FC Saarbrücken’s campaign ended with a 3-1 defeat against 1. FC Magdeburg. Despite a competitive start in front of their home crowd, the third-division side conceded two goals before halftime through Kaars (43rd minute) and Ghrieb (45+2 minute). Ghrieb added another goal shortly after the break (59th minute) before Tim Civeja managed to pull one back for Saarbrücken (67th minute). Ultimately, Magdeburg secured a 3-1 victory, progressing to the second round of the competition.
