Armin Laschet, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the German Bundestag, has voiced support for recent negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. In remarks published Sunday, Laschet stated that the meetings introduce a valuable dynamic to diplomatic efforts.
He expressed concern regarding what he perceives as largely one-sided skepticism and criticism originating from European sources regarding the encounter. “Historically, we would have welcomed understanding between the Russian and American presidents, viewing it as a positive sign for de-escalation” Laschet stated. He countered assertions that the meetings represent a diminished role for Putin on the international stage, highlighting Russia’s established stable relationships with numerous countries over recent years. “Putin and Lavrov have consistently maintained a presence globally, largely excluding engagement within Europe.
Laschet further critiqued the European approach to Ukraine policy in recent years, arguing that rhetoric has often outweighed substantive action. He suggested that European nations bear some responsibility for being excluded from direct negotiations, noting a reliance on military solutions during the tenure of US President Joe Biden. “It’s notable that European leaders are now expressing frustration at not being at the table, after resisting dialogue previously” he commented.
Acknowledging the complex realities on the ground, Laschet anticipates that any eventual resolution will likely involve territorial concessions from Ukraine. “It’s widely understood that discussions will inevitably address the occupied territories, though few are willing to articulate this publicly” he said. He emphasized, however, that formal legal recognition of any annexation is unacceptable. “Such recognition would legitimize the conflict, a scenario that is fundamentally unacceptable”.
