A high-level European delegation, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington D.C. on Monday.
According to government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, Chancellor Merz will accompany President Zelenskyy and other European leaders for political discussions following President Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The trip aims to facilitate an exchange of information and will focus on the current state of peace negotiations. Chancellor Merz and the other European leaders will be emphasizing Germany’s and Europe’s, interest in a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Discussions are expected to cover topics such as security guarantees, territorial issues and continued support for Ukraine in defending against Russian aggression. Maintaining pressure through sanctions will also be a key component of the dialogue, Kornelius stated.
The participation of President von der Leyen was previously announced at the request of President Zelenskyy.
