German Intelligence Seeks Expanded Powers After Spying Scandal

Members of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Bundestag are calling for increased protection against espionage following a reported cyberattack targeting Felor Badenberg, Berlin’s Senator for Justice. Sebastian Fiedler, the SPD’s spokesperson on domestic affairs, emphasized the sophistication and potential danger demonstrated by the incident, suggesting it exemplifies a highly organized and professional operation, likely originating from a foreign state actor.

Fiedler, who personally knows Senator Badenberg, highlighted her professional capabilities, asserting that the success of the attack on her office underscores the skill of those responsible. He suggested the incident could serve to raise public awareness regarding the current threat landscape.

The SPD representative stated that discussions are already underway to determine how to enhance protections against espionage and sabotage and to strengthen cyber defense capabilities. He clarified that the attack wasn’t solely directed at Badenberg as an individual, but rather at her position as a member of the Berlin state government and a constitutional organ. Increased powers and resources for both federal and state criminal police, as well as intelligence agencies, are being considered as part of the response.

Fiedler identified multiple foreign actors as potential threats, explicitly mentioning Russia and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, noting their established capabilities in the realm of cyberattacks. He indicated that suspicion falling on these groups is not unexpected, given their known track record.
