UniCredit continues to strengthen its position in Commerzbank, now holding approximately 26 percent of the shares, the Italian banking group announced Monday.
The conversion of synthetic equity positions into physical shares is ongoing, with the remaining portion expected to be completed shortly, bringing UniCredit’s total stake to around 29 percent. This move solidifies UniCredit’s position as the largest single shareholder in Commerzbank, the bank stated. Despite the increased shareholding, UniCredit clarified that it does not currently intend to seek representation on the Commerzbank’s management board.
Industry analysts suggest that this continued increase in ownership makes a potential takeover bid from UniCredit for Commerzbank increasingly likely.
