AfD Surge: Warning Against Overfocusing on the Party in Eastern Germany

Government officials are cautioning against excessive focus on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) amidst recent polling data indicating significant gains for the party in Saxony-Anhalt. Elisabeth Kaiser, the Federal Government’s Representative for Eastern Germany, emphasized the importance of fostering constructive dialogues concerning the nation’s future, rather than centering discussions solely around the AfD.

Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Kaiser argued that continuous focus on the AfD could inadvertently benefit the party. She highlighted the demonstrable anxieties of citizens regarding international crises, acknowledging that no government, regardless of its political affiliation, can immediately resolve these concerns. Kaiser stressed the need for critical examination of seemingly straightforward solutions to complex issues.

The government representative also emphasized the far-reaching consequences of electoral choices, urging citizens to carefully consider which parties they entrust with the future of the country.

Recent polling conducted by the research institute Infratest Dimap, for the “Magdeburger Volksstimme” “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, places the AfD as the leading force with 39 percent support, with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at 27 percent. The Left party currently holds third place with 13 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is projected to receive 7 percent, potentially exceeding their record low from the most recent state election. The Basis for Values party (BSW) would secure 6 percent. The Green Party and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) would not be represented in the state parliament at the current projected levels.
