Germany Acknowledges EU Sanctions Proposal Against Israel

The German government has responded cautiously to the European Commission’s proposal to impose sanctions against Israel.

Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, Deputy Government Spokesman Sebastian Hille acknowledged the Commission’s announcement, noting, “We have, of course, taken note of what transpired today”. He emphasized that there has, as of yet, been no majority support for the proposed measures within the European Council.

Addressing the recent Israeli action targeting Hamas leadership in Qatar, Hille reiterated that violations of Qatar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are “unacceptable”. He stressed the need to prevent the escalation of the conflict across the region, adding that such actions risk negatively impacting ongoing mediation efforts.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier on Wednesday announced proposals including the suspension of payments to Israel. She also intends to propose sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers and violent settlers, along with a partial suspension of the association agreement in trade matters. These proposals have encountered resistance from several EU member states, notably Germany.
