The Christian Social Union (CSU) has voiced strong criticism regarding European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s decision to suspend EU payments to Israel.
Klaus Holetschek, the CSU parliamentary group leader in the Bavarian state parliament, stated in an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” that halting these payments represents a misguided approach. He emphasized the importance of a secure and stable Israel, asserting that this is in Germany’s core interest and that the EU Commission’s policy reversal is a significant error.
While acknowledging the possibility of criticizing the Netanyahu government – a practice Holetschek noted occurs within Israel itself – he stressed the need for Germany to unequivocally demonstrate its support for Israel. “Israel’s security is a matter of national interest for us” Holetschek declared.
Referring to the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023 and the detention of young Israelis by Hamas, Holetschek warned against downplaying the ongoing threat. He insisted that the release of hostages held by Hamas should be a primary demand.
Addressing speculation about a shift in policy from the center-right Union parties, Holetschek firmly rejected the notion. “The entire Union stands by Israel. For the CSU in particular, the friendship with Israel and the protection of Jewish life in Germany are a matter of the heart. That must and will not change” he asserted.
