Germany to Resume Afghan Deportations After Talks with Taliban

Sources indicate a significant expansion of deportations of Afghan citizens is being considered by the German government.

According to reports, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, under Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), is preparing for a renewed push to return Afghan nationals to their home country. The reported changes would involve a more streamlined, consistent and larger-scale process than previously implemented, moving away from primarily chartered flights and utilizing scheduled commercial airliners for repatriation.

Government officials are reportedly engaged in discussions with Taliban authorities to facilitate these deportations. Earlier this month, representatives from the Federal Ministry of the Interior met with Taliban officials in Qatar to establish a regular deportation mechanism. Plans are reportedly underway to send German representatives to Kabul, the Afghan capital, to continue these discussions on-site. Qatar is reportedly acting as a mediator in these negotiations.

Following the Taliban’s takeover in the summer of 2021, only two deportation flights have taken place from Germany to Afghanistan. In Autumn 2024, 28 individuals were deported, followed by 81 Afghan nationals identified as serious criminals in July 2025.
