New Policy Package Proposed

A new package of measures aimed at accelerating Germany’s energy transition has been proposed by Minister for Economic Affairs, Katherina Reiche (CDU). The proposal is underpinned by a monitoring report on the energy transition, recently compiled by scientific institutions BET and EWI at the ministry’s request.

Minister Reiche acknowledged the successes achieved in renewable energy expansion, noting that almost 60% of Germany’s electricity generation currently originates from sources such as wind and solar power. However, she emphasized that the energy transition now stands at a critical juncture.

To ensure its success, Reiche stressed the need to prioritize reliability, supply security, affordability and the economic viability of the energy system for the nation’s industrial base. She argued this focus is essential for safeguarding jobs, maintaining competitiveness and strengthening social cohesion.

The proposed measures encompass a thorough reassessment of energy requirements – described as an “honest needs assessment” – combined with incentives for renewable energy development aligned with market dynamics. Further priorities include the simultaneous expansion of energy grids alongside decentralized flexibility solutions. The promotion of hydrogen as an energy carrier is also included in the proposed strategy.

Minister Reiche concluded by advocating for energy policy decisions that actively leverage market forces, technological diversity and innovation, ultimately aiming to establish a crisis-resistant and economically sustainable energy transition.
