What It Means

A leading figure within the Bavarian Green Party is advocating for a “mandatory service obligation” aimed at broadening national contribution beyond current demographics. Katharina Schulze, parliamentary group leader for the Greens in the Bavarian State Parliament, articulated her proposal in an interview with the Mediengruppe Bayern.

Schulze expressed the belief that all members of society have a role to play in safeguarding the nation’s wellbeing. She argued that the responsibility for maintaining defense capabilities should not be solely placed on younger men.

Her suggested framework envisions a compulsory service commitment for individuals between the ages of 18 and 67. Participants could fulfill this obligation through service within the armed forces (Bundeswehr), engagement with emergency services like the fire department, or through voluntary community work.

The proposal reflects a broader acknowledgment of shifting global circumstances and a desire to ensure the preservation of stability and security. Schulze emphasized that the long period of peace, freedom and security experienced has been a significant benefit and that all efforts should be made to maintain these values.

In related discussions surrounding the planned phase-out of internal combustion engines by 2035, Schulze acknowledged the minor adjustment in deadlines but stressed the urgency of transitioning towards a sustainable future, a shift already underway within the economy. She reaffirmed the necessity for phasing out combustion engines, emphasizing their lack of a viable long-term future.
