Logistics giant DHL is preparing to recruit thousands of delivery personnel to handle the anticipated surge in parcels during the upcoming holiday season. According to CEO Tobias Meyer, in an interview with “Focus” magazine, the company anticipates needing a workforce comparable to last year’s recruitment of approximately 10,000 temporary employees. Final planning for the seasonal staff intake is still underway.
Meyer expressed confidence in securing sufficient motivated personnel, citing a significantly higher volume of applications received this year compared to previous periods, potentially influenced by the current labor market conditions.
The ongoing shift towards online retail continues to fuel parcel volume growth, a trend DHL observes across various sectors. Meyer highlighted a discernible shift away from traditional brick-and-mortar stores and towards online ordering in areas such as pet food and prescription medications, forecasting that this transition will persist.
While this increasing parcel demand may not necessitate a permanent expansion of the delivery workforce, Meyer suggested a realignment of resources within the company. He anticipates a redistribution of employees from the declining letter mail business towards the growing parcel service sector.
