Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has reportedly abstained from alcohol consumption since assuming office in May. Speaking at an event hosted by the “Rheinische Post” in Düsseldorf on Monday evening, Merz stated that his decision to forgo alcohol is a consequence of his official duties, indicating a choice between excessive consumption and complete abstinence.
This revelation casts a new light on recent public appearances. Earlier in September, Merz mentioned enjoying “two beers” during a meeting with SPD leader Bärbel Bas and similarly, the stein of beer he consumed at the Oktoberfest a few days ago – again alongside Bas, as well as Markus Söder and Stefan Klingbeil – are now believed to have been alcohol-free.
During the same event, Chancellor Merz remarked on a recent inspection of the chancellery’s wine cellar, describing it as “impressive” and noting the presence of bottles dating back to his predecessors, which he jokingly suggested needed to be cleared out.
Reflecting on the impact of the chancellorship, Merz acknowledged a degree of personal transformation. He stated that he had considered how the position had changed him, confirming a noticeable effect. He also emphasized the significant impact the role has on family life. The Chancellor further asserted that he has prioritized avoiding pressure and time constraints from the outset of his tenure.
