The parliamentary commissioner for victims of the Socialist Unity Party (SED), Evelyn Zupke, has expressed profound gratitude and joy regarding the Day of German Unity. In a statement to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, she emphasized the significance of the reunification process, particularly for those who previously experienced political imprisonment.
Zupke underscored that the efforts and challenges associated with reunification have demonstrably benefitted individuals now living in freedom. She characterized the Day of German Unity as a source of both happiness and a moment for reflection and appreciation.
Beyond celebrating the unified nation, Zupke highlighted the importance of remembering those who actively fought for freedom and self-determination within the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). She acknowledged their crucial role in both the Peaceful Revolution and the eventual achievement of German Unity, stating that their contributions were indispensable to the outcome.
