Trump Threatens Resumption of Nuclear Testing, Risks Escalation

The announcement by former US President Donald Trump regarding the resumption of nuclear weapons testing has triggered significant concern within diplomatic circles, with former Munich Security Conference chairman and seasoned diplomat Christoph Heusgen expressing deep unease. Heusgen cautioned that while Trump’s pronouncements are not always adhered to, the mere declaration itself poses a substantial risk of destabilizing global security and undermining decades of disarmament efforts.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Heusgen highlighted the potential for a dangerous escalation. He warned that Trump’s move could incentivize other nuclear-armed nations to follow suit, initiating a perilous spiral of renewed weapons development and heightened international tensions. This prospect directly contradicts the spirit of the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, signed by 187 nations with the express aim of permanently prohibiting nuclear testing.

The treaty was born from a collective hope for a world free from the devastating environmental and human consequences of nuclear detonations, consequences painfully experienced in the past. Heusgen emphasized the urgency for the German government, mirroring the proactive stance taken by former Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel three decades ago, to actively engage with all nuclear states and consistently advocate against the resumption of testing.

Critically, Heusgen underscored the necessity for a return to the principle that “any use of nuclear weapons – even for testing – should remain a taboo”. This stance signals a growing apprehension that the erosion of established non-proliferation norms under a potential second Trump administration could have irreversible and detrimental ramifications for global peace and security, demanding a renewed and unified European response.
