The head of the German Red Cross (DRK), Hermann Gröhe, has issued a stark warning regarding the preparedness of German hospitals for potential conflict scenarios, drawing parallels to the infrastructure observed during a recent visit to Israel. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” Gröhe highlighted the existence of secure, underground operating rooms at the Ben-Gurion University hospital, advocating for similar protective measures to be implemented in strategically selected facilities within Germany.
Gröhe’s call for enhanced hospital resilience isn’t solely focused on physical infrastructure. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining operational capacity during armed conflict, stating that hospitals must be equipped to continue providing essential healthcare services under duress. This implicitly raises questions about the current level of investment in civil defense preparedness within Germany, particularly given the evolving geopolitical landscape and escalating tensions in Europe.
Beyond domestic concerns, Gröhe also voiced deep alarm over the escalating violence against humanitarian aid workers globally. “Humanitarian aid is receiving too little protection” he asserted, adding that the existing legal framework is being “violated and eroded”.
