Rheinmetall & OHB Vie With Airbus for Germany’s €10 B Military Satellite Network‎

Rheinmetall is looking to broaden its presence in space. According to a media report, the German defence manufacturer plans to team up with Bremen‑based satellite company OHB to bid on the largest satellite programme for the German Armed Forces-a project that has also attracted the attention of Airbus. The contract value is expected to reach up to €10 billion.
Handelsblatt, drawing on statements from five individuals entrusted with the matter, describes the intended satellite constellation as “SATCOMBw Stufe 4”. The system would interconnect up to 200 satellites, enabling communication across tanks, ships, and soldiers through 2029.
In terms of technical design, the project is reminiscent of SpaceX’s Starlink network. An insider told Handelsblatt that the tender could be issued as early as February.
