Following the European Union’s decision to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, Iran has responded by calling the armed forces of EU member states “terrorist groups”. The announcement was made by Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the President of the Iranian Parliament.
The backdrop to this move is a 2019 law that the United States enacted after listing the Revolutionary Guard on its terrorism watch list. That legislation authorizes counter‑measures against any nation that adopts the U.S. designation. However, the tangible effects of the EU’s listing are likely to be limited.
