President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier praised the late former Bundestag president Rita Süssmuth as a great woman and a passionate champion of democracy. He wrote to her daughter on Sunday, calling Süssmuth a visionary who always moved ahead, a militant and a role model-especially for many women. With her courage, perseverance, humour and conviction she played a major role in gradually translating equality into action in our country.
Throughout her career, Süssmuth was active in academic boards, commissions and curatorships, tirelessly advocating for better work‑family balance and for women’s advancement into leadership positions. As federal minister for Youth, Family and Health, she successfully expanded the ministry’s responsibilities to include women’s issues, becoming Germany’s first female minister in that portfolio. Her energy and charisma inspired countless women to pursue top roles in politics, business and society.
The president also highlighted her contributions to the fight against AIDS, the development of an enlightened immigration policy, and reforms of parliamentary work. “Rita Süssmuth moved a great deal-for our country and for its people” Steinmeier said. “Her warmth, her humour, and her deep humanity will remain unforgettable. Her commitment to equality is, to this day, a model”.
Süssmuth died at the age of 88. She served as minister for Youth, Family and Health from 1985 to 1988 and was president of the German Bundestag from 1988 until 1998.
