Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (CDU) will not stop by the Ukraine‑Russia peace talks that take place in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and Thursday during his trip to the Gulf region. The trip’s focus, according to Deputy Government Spokesperson Steffen Meyer in Berlin on Wednesday, is on other matters. “Therefore I do not expect the Chancellor to be present at the discussions on site” Meyer said. He added that Germany remains closely involved through various channels.
Meyer said it is good that the U.S.‑mediated talks between Ukraine and Russia are continuing. Germany is backing Ukraine and accompanying it in the process, coordinating closely with European and American partners. “We are working intensively with those partners to bring this war to a real end” he said. However, he continued to doubt the sincerity of Russia’s efforts toward genuine peace.
