German MPs Urge Real Peace as Russia Seeks Time‑Buy in Abu Dhabi Ukraine Talks

Foreign policy officials of the governing coalition have warned that the next round of peace talks in Abu Dubai among Russia, Ukraine and the United States could generate unrealistic expectations.

Jürgen Hardt, the foreign‑policy spokesperson for the Union faction (CDU), told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that Russia’s deliberate attacks on Kyiv’s energy infrastructure demonstrate that the Kremlin has no real interest in peace. Instead, it is exploiting the cold winter to erode the morale of the Ukrainian people. “For Putin, the talks are about gaining time and points. His goal remains the subjugation of Ukraine and the weakening of a free Europe” Hardt said. He urged that U.S. President Donald Trump should not fall for such tactics and that a ceasefire should be genuine rather than a façade.

Adis Ahmetovic, the foreign‑policy spokesman for the SPD faction, called for a ceasefire as the next step and for a solution that is not imposed on Ukraine. “What is decisive is a fair and sustainable peace, not symbolic formats or unilateral arrangements. If substantial results are lacking, Europeans will need to intensify consideration of further sanctions and increase pressure on the United States to take action as well” Ahmetovic told the RND.

The talks are scheduled to begin on Wednesday and will run for two days.
