Some traditional Valentine’s‑Day gifts have risen in price more than the overall inflation rate over the past year. According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the cost of chocolate has gone up 17.8 % from 2024 to 2025, while ready‑cut flowers have increased by 5.3 %.
For those who prefer a night out over giving sweets or blossoms, the price hike extends to dining and beverages: restaurants, cafés, bars and similar establishments saw a 3.6 % rise in 2025 compared with 2024. In contrast, the general consumer price index climbed only 2.2 % during the same period.
Looking further back, the medium‑term trend shows an even steeper rise in classic Valentine’s gifts. From 2020 to 2025, chocolate prices rose by 41.7 %, ready‑cut flowers by 38.2 %, and restaurant, café and bar food and drink prices by 31.8 %. The overall consumer price index for the five‑year span increased by 21.9 %.
