SPD Budget Expert Urges Swift Decision on German‑French FCAS Fighter‑Jet Project, Accuses Macron & Dassault of Delays.

Shortly before the opening of the Munich Security Conference, SPD budget and defence expert Andreas Schwarz intensified pressure for a decision on the German‑French FCAS (Future Combat Air System) fighter‑jet project. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he warned that President Emmanuel Macron would be tested on his ability to push the French aircraft manufacturer Dassault beyond its contractual commitments. “It is pointless for the political leaders in Paris and Berlin to agree if the French industry refuses to honour the contract” Schwarz said.

Macron has recently denied that the project is failing, yet doubts remain. Schwarz reiterated that the initiative was conceived at eye‑level: the German parliament also expects an equal‑strength partnership, seeking not only cost sharing but also shared knowledge and production. He noted that the current signals from the French industry do not reflect this parity.

Highlighting the critical nature of the program, Schwarz urged a swift decision. “Given its significance, a timely choice is essential” he said. He added that other European partners are available and that Dassault and Macron should be fully aware of the alternatives.
