Deputy CDU Leader Welcomes Merkel’s Surprise Visit to Party Congress, Emphasizes 16‑Year Legacy of Leadership

Sepp Müller (CDU), deputy chair of the Union faction in the Bundestag, welcomed the late former chancellor Angela Merkel’s unexpected announcement that she would attend the CDU party congress.

In a ”Frühstart” interview on RTL and ntv on Wednesday, Müller said, “Angela Merkel governed successfully for 16 years”. He added that should Friedrich Merkz’s goal be to continue that legacy, “I wish him and all of us much success. Together we should secure a chancellorship as successful as the one we had with Angela Merkel”.

Müller reflected that some past decisions were misguided, but emphasized that moving forward the party will act “in different and better ways”. He noted, “One thing is clear: we had a great chancellor. Angela Merkel steered our country through turbulent times”.

Regarding Friedrich Merkz’s re‑election as CDU party chair, Müller expects a very favorable outcome, better than those of other coalition party leaders. He stressed that the result is not about percentages but about positioning the CDU as a party that can maintain its profile. “It’s essential to have a party chair at the helm who holds the collective strength of our members behind him” Müller said. “I anticipate that he will have that support by an overwhelming majority”.
