Amthor Endorses Germany’s “Pressure Points” List Targeting the U.S. to Strengthen EU Economic Autonomy

Philipp Amthor, a CDU board member and parliamentary state secretary, said he thinks it is appropriate that Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is positioning himself against the United States by publishing a list of economic pressure tools, according to media reports. The list is supposed to show the areas in which the United States are economically dependent on Germany and Europe. “For us it is already important that foreign policy also prepares for scenarios” Amthor told the TV station “Welt” on Friday.

In the discussion with Donald Trump – which the German states “in cooperation” if it must be put diplomatically friendly – it has become clear: “He already speaks the language of strength and not only the language of flexibility” Amthor added. “That is why we need to outline now how we, as the European Union and as Germany, can make the right points there. I find the self‑confidence the chancellor displays in this context exactly right”.

However, the CDU politician clarified that the goal is not to position the economy against the United States. “We do not want to organize the economy and economic growth or competitiveness against the United States of America” he said. “We can also organize it from our own strength and preferably together with them”.
