The Essen‑based chemical company Evonik is considering possible recovery claims in a U.S. customs dispute.
“We are clearly weighing whether we will proceed” interim CFO Claus Rettig told the “Power and Policy” podcast from Politico. “But we would rather wait and see what the U.S. government does first” he added.
Rettig mentioned that Evonik could seek back a “smaller two‑digit million‑dollar” amount. The company is only marginally hit by U.S. tariffs because a large share of its business is produced on site.
He also acknowledged that competition can bring benefits. “We actually have positive effects from our U.S. operations, which have become somewhat weaker amid Chinese competition” Rettig explained.
Overall, Evonik remains a proponent of open markets. The company will continue to champion “free world trade, free competition, and open markets” the interim CFO said.
