Power Outage at Regio IT Triggers Widespread Municipal Service Failures Across North Rhine‑Westphalia

On Tuesday, a major outage at Regio IT, the municipal IT service provider in North Rhine‑Westphalia, caused widespread software problems across several communities. The company said the fault stemmed from a power outage that disrupted a data center.

Regio IT is collaborating with external vendors to restore service as quickly as possible. At present, the company expects that productive operations will not be feasible today.

The disruption affected several districts, including Hochsauerlandkreis, Oberbergische Kreis and Kreis Soest, as well as the cities of Aachen, Eschweiler and Düren. In Hochsauerlandkreis, drivers’ licence and vehicle registration offices are impacted. In Aachen, appointments at the civil registry office and the citizen service centre are often unavailable.
