German Teachers’ Union Calls for Iran War Lessons in Schools

The German Teachers’ Association supports making the Iran war a part of the curriculum.
“ The topic can and should be included in lessons” said Stefan Düll, president of the teachers’ union, in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” on Thursday. “What matters, however, is that the treatment of the conflict is age‑appropriate and handled with sensitivity”.

According to Düll, how much the war enters into everyday teaching often depends on the students’ own life circumstances. “Whether a teacher introduces the topic actively should therefore always be guided by the specific situation in the classroom” he added.

Explaining complex political backgrounds to children who have no prior knowledge can be difficult. “In such cases it is wiser to stick to well‑established facts rather than venturing into evaluations or intricate geopolitical explanations” Düll advised.
