Martin Werding, a pro‑business economist, rejects the SPD’s demand for an “excess profit tax” on petrochemical firms. He told the “Rheinische Post” on Friday that competition among gas stations is uneven, but tax law can’t fix that. “Profits are taxed in Germany, and not too lightly. Excess profits can’t be defined cleanly, whether from an economic or a legal standpoint” he said. Bremen’s state premier Andreas Bovenschulte, an SPD, had earlier called for such a tax against oil companies that are expanding their margins disproportionately.
