Julia Klöckner, president of the German Bundestag and a member of the CDU, defended the military actions of Israel and the United States against Iran and dismissed concerns about international law.
In an interview with newspapers of the Funke media group, she argued that the crisis in the Middle East did not begin with the strike. “Israel, the only democracy in the region, is surrounded by states that want to destroy Israel and the West as a whole” she said. She also pointed out that Iran funds terrorists worldwide and supports Russia’s war against Ukraine.
When asked whether the operation against Iran is legally justified, Klöckner replied, “International law matters. But should it become a shield for terrorists who slaughter their own people and systematically oppress women? We can examine that in theory”.
She added that it is interesting to see who invokes international law and at what times, and she expressed concern about what is happening on German soil, within universities, and the resurgence of antisemitism. “Antisemitism is not only right‑wing; it is also intellectually left‑extremist and Islamist‑fundamentalist” she said, noting that “we have a lot to do”.
In recent days, German legal scholars, the SPD leadership, and UN Secretary‑General António Guterres have stated that the military attack on Iran is not supported by international law.
