Against the backdrop of escalating tensions with Russia, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić reaffirmed his determination to steer his country into the European Union. He told the Süddeutsche Zeitung that he expects to receive EU recommendations in the coming days, with which he will approach the parliament.
“I will take all of your recommendations” Vučić said. “But I do not believe Serbia can become a full EU member in the near future. Instead, I am looking for a type of partial accession”.
He explained his vision: “I believe in the common market, in a borderless Europe. If we could become politically and economically part of the EU in this way-without voting rights, without veto power, and without our own commissioner-it would already make us very happy”.
When asked about a possible third term, which the constitution bars, Vučić said, “Naturally I am not allowed to do that, and I have no intention of changing the constitution, as some media suggest”.
