Federal queer liaison Sophie Koch (SPD) says there is no need to amend Germany’s self‑determination law.
Speaking to the Zeitungen der Funke‑Mediengruppe about the ongoing evaluation of the law, she said she was very optimistic that the outcome will confirm what she calls “the right and important nature of this law, and how it has helped many people”. She added that she can already affirm the law will “definitely remain in force” and that it is not a “bargaining chip”.
Koch also argued that attempts by far‑right activists to undermine the law do not make it vulnerable to abuse. “It mainly shows that there are individuals who are antisemitic and queer‑phobic and who want to attack this law” she told the Funke‑Zeitungen. “It frustrates me that such isolated cases are used to challenge the entire law. Just because some people evade taxes doesn’t mean one should abolish tax collection”.
She urged politicians to respond to right‑wing opposition with calm and prudence rather than rash reactions.
