Germany’s Energy Authority Alarmed by Sharp Gas Price Rise, Storage at 22%

The German Federal Network Agency is alarmed by the sharp rise in gas prices. ”Price spikes after the outbreak of the war have been severe” said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur, in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” on a Wednesday. Day‑ahead wholesale gas prices have, according to him, roughly doubled.

Müller added that the future trajectory will depend on how long the conflict lasts. His assessment of supply security, he said, remains essentially unchanged: the markets have enough supply, but prices are climbing.

This reality makes it harder to recharge storage facilities. ”Filling gas storage for the next winter will be challenging” he warned, and urged gas traders to act. He emphasized that storage refilling is not a state responsibility but that of the traders, who in turn must meet the needs of their private and industrial customers. At present, Germany’s gas storage is filled to only 22 % of capacity.
