After the SPD’s loss in the Rhineland‑Palatinate state election, members of the Jusos demanded that the federal party take concrete action. Philipp Türmer, chair of the SPD’s youth wing, told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that the result was a “disaster for the party as a whole”. He criticized the leadership for offering no clear answers: the top officers were busy with government work, but “there’s no sense of renewal or a compelling narrative for the SPD”. Türmer stressed that if the party is unwilling to make fundamental changes now, those who remain passive are part of the problem. He added that the crisis is larger than a single state or poll, and that structural, personnel and policy reforms must be considered.
Ralf Stegner, an SPD foreign‑policy officer, also urged the party to rethink its course after the defeat. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, he called the result “shocking” in a series of negative outcomes for the SPD. He warned that no one has a one‑size‑fits‑all remedy and that an over‑confident attitude won’t solve anything at 18:01 on election night. Stegner made it clear that in an existential crisis “doing nothing” is not an option.
SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil acknowledged that the federal party bears the main responsibility for the outcome. Speaking to ARD, he said that decisive issues need to be addressed and that the current reform debates should be launched from scratch.
