SPD Chiefs Klingbeil & Bas Vow to Stay on Post After Rhineland‑Palatinate Election Blow

After the SPD’s poor showing in the Rhineland‑Palatinate election, party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas signaled that they intend to remain in their positions.

Klingbeil, speaking on Monday after a party presidium meeting at the Willy‑Brandt House, acknowledged that the election loss inevitably raises questions about personnel. “I am very grateful for how controversially, how fiercely, yet also how openly we have debated” he said. He added, “Given the current situation, we will not drag the second‑largest governing party into chaos or engage in a self‑entangling process that focuses on ourselves instead of the country”.

Bas expressed a similar view. She stated that the public expects the SPD not to spiral into self‑destructiveness, noting that the country now needs a strong government. She echoed the presidium’s consensus that the focus must shift to discussing substance and strategy to propel the nation forward. “It makes no sense to waste weeks tearing ourselves apart over personnel” Bas concluded.
