Trump Extends Iran Ultimatum After Claiming Positive Talks on Middle East Peace

The United States and Iran have begun talks, according to U.S. President Donald Trump, in an effort to achieve a diplomatic resolution of the conflict in the Middle East.

On Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social that he was “pleased to report that the United States of America and Iran have had very good and productive talks over the past two days on a complete and comprehensive settlement of our hostilities in the Middle East”. He added that, because of the tone and tenor of these “deep, detailed, and constructive conversations” which are to continue throughout the week, he has directed the Department of Defense to suspend all military attacks on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days.

Initially, Trump had given Iran a 48‑hour ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz, a deadline that was set to expire early Tuesday morning. The current delay is “subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions” Trump said.
