In the coalition’s internal debate over the debt‑brake reform outlined in the coalition agreement, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU set out clear limits. Speaking to the Sunday edition of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine”, he warned that the reform must never “enable additional borrowing”.
He stressed that a debt brake’s purpose is to restrain indebtedness, not to provide a loophole for rolling reforms into ever‑new debt, which he said would only deepen existing problems.
While Dobrindt intends to examine the findings of the so‑called debt‑brake commission, he made it clear that he is “not willing to introduce a new debt‑brake that will lead to further fresh borrowing”.
