German Authorities Detain Ukrainian National on Alleged Russian Espionage Charges

The federal prosecutor’s office issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian national on suspicion of spying for Russia. He was taken into provisional custody in Hagen on Friday and presented to the investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice, who approved the warrant and ordered preventive detention, the General Prosecutor (GBA) said on Monday.

The suspect allegedly worked for a Russian intelligence service and has been gathering information about a German resident since November 2025. The man in question joined the Ukrainian armed forces and took part in combat operations after the start of Russia’s war. The surveillance operation was said to have been aimed at preparing further intelligence activities against this target in Germany. Investigations have been assigned to the Hagen police precinct.
