Merz Secures German Aid to Rebuild Syria, Urges Inclusive Return of All Syrians

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) pledged assistance for Syria’s reconstruction during the visit of President Ahmed al‑Schara to Berlin. “In recent weeks we have developed an ambitious joint work programme for rebuilding and repatriation that is now moving forward” Merz told reporters on Monday. The aim is to enable Syrians who are abroad, particularly in Germany, to return home safely. The federal government will support the Syrian authorities through expertise, advisory services and institutions to rebuild infrastructure and lay the groundwork for economic growth.

To implement this plan, a joint task force has been established and will begin its work shortly. A delegation is already scheduled to travel to Syria in the coming days.

During the meeting, Merz also urged al‑Schara to create a new Syria where all citizens-regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender-have equal space. He called for an end to violence against minorities and dissenters, and for a clear rejection of the terrorist threat that has long plagued the country. “I know how committed they are to this cause and how far they have already come” Merz added.
