Thomas Röwekamp, the chairman of the Defense Committee in the German Bundestag and a member of the CDU, stated that he finds Trump’s threat to bomb bridges in Iran to be militarily unsupportable. Speaking to the TV channel “Welt” on Tuesday, Röwekamp said, “At least we cannot recognize a strategy behind it”. He added that the situation is not coordinated among NATO members nor has it been agreed upon with Germany as a partner. The CDU politician emphasized that the German government is engaging intensely in appealing for an end to these hostilities and for a rapid agreement. However, he stressed that Iran must also contribute to a resolution. Specifically, it must be ensured that both future military attacks-whether originating from Iran itself or through its proxies, particularly targeting Israel-as well as the threat level in Europe are abandoned. Röwekamp expressed skepticism about the idea of the US withdrawing from NATO, a move Trump has threatened multiple times. “It is not that simple to leave NATO” he remarked, noting that this would be impossible even for a US president. He also stated that Germany and its partners are accustomed to such rhetoric following the past few weeks and months. Regarding the discrepancy between political talk and binding alliance commitments, Röwekamp referenced the debate surrounding Greenland. He concluded by saying, “Regarding the other matter, we have made firm agreements, and I have no doubt that the United States will adhere to the agreements made within NATO in the future”.
