Omid Nouripour, the Green party’s Deputy President of the Bundestag, is calling for Germany to assume a central leadership role in securing a peace settlement in the Middle East. Speaking to the Funke media group, the Green politician argued that Germany must work within Europe to establish an independent position. He sharply criticized the current government’s approach, calling its previous stance one of “head-in-the-sand” which he stated was contrary to Germany’s own best interests. Nouripour stressed that Germany has substantial and tangible interests in the region, ranging from guaranteeing the freedom of maritime shipping to maintaining energy partnerships and ensuring overall stability.
He urged that the current two-week truce period be utilized effectively, noting that achieving lasting peace remains completely unclear. Furthermore, Nouripour expressed skepticism regarding the Iranian regime’s intentions, pointing out that the regime appears to view itself as the victor simply because it managed to survive the conflict.
The former Green party leader also reminded the public that the war has impacted twenty different countries. He highlighted the dramatic situation in Lebanon, insisting that any resolution must, as a primary concern, focus on protecting the civilian population.
