SPD Minister Pushes Energy Tax Cuts, Demands Anti-Profit Tax Amid Crisis Hike

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) anticipates that the Bundestag will swiftly approve the draft law intended to lower energy taxes and continues to advocate for the implementation of a so-called “superprofit tax”. Speaking to the “Bild” (Wednesday edition), Klingbeil stated, “We delivered immediately. My draft law to reduce the energy tax is ready and can now be debated in the Bundestag very quickly. We will not leave the people alone in this crisis. Now is the time for relief”. Klingbeil noted that commuters, craftsmen, haulers, and everyone else struggling with high fuel prices should benefit from the measures. Following the proposal to reduce energy taxes on fuels, Klingbeil announced additional steps to combat high gas prices, and despite concerns from the CDU/CSU, he maintained his push for a “superprofit tax”. The SPD leader said, “We will tighten competition law and continue to pursue the superprofit tax” emphasizing his desire to ensure that excessive crisis profits are recouped and returned to the citizens.
