The planned votes in the European Parliament regarding the digital euro are expected to be postponed, according to reports from the “Handelsblatt”, which cited several people knowledgeable about the matter. The most likely date for the vote within the responsible Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) is now cited as June 23rd, though June 3rd remains a possibility. Furthermore, the full European Parliament might hold its vote in July. This changes the previously scheduled dates, which were May 5th for the Committee and May 26th for the plenary session.
Several aspects remain unresolved, according to insiders. Key sticking points include finding a balance between user privacy and necessary anti-money laundering provisions. Further disagreements concern the method of distribution-specifically whether the digital euro will be issued through the ECB or through commercial banks. Additionally, the limits on the maximum amount users can hold in digital euros, as well as the fee structure banks can charge merchants when accepting these digital euro payments, are still highly contentious issues.
