Cabinet Postpones Housing Law Vote Amid Disputes Over Heating Cost Sharing Between Landlords and Tenants

The Federal Cabinet must postpone the planned adoption of the Building Modernization Act (GMG) scheduled for this Wednesday. According to ‘Bild’ (Tuesday edition), reports from coalition circles indicate that an agreement on the draft law has not yet been reached. Specifically, a point of dispute between the Union and the SPD concerns how the heating costs for landlords and tenants are to be allocated when installing new gas or oil furnaces. However, confidence is now expressed that an agreement will be reached by the end of the week. Previously, the party leaders from the Union and SPD had agreed on key points for the GMG in February. Initially, the cabinet had aimed to pass the draft law before Easter.
