DGB rejects ‘Innovation-linked’ temporary contracts, calling proposal redundant and contrary to labor rights

DGB Chairwoman Yasmin Fahimi rejected a proposal made by SPD leader and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil that aimed to extend fixed-term contracts to companies that invest in innovation.

Klingbeil had previously stated at the Bertelsmann Foundation in late March that he could envision enabling longer fixed-term contracts for businesses investing in innovation, modeling it after existing practices within the startup sector. He suggested that this measure would encourage more companies to hire employees despite current economic uncertainty.

Speaking to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, Fahimi strongly contested this approach, asserting that it should be a matter of common understanding that corporations naturally invest in innovation. She also criticized the idea of granting employees any form of premium or bonus simply for showing up to work.

Fahimi countered the proposal by emphasizing that true investment is based on the expectation of a solid business model. She concluded that if such a foundational model is lacking, the specific details concerning employee termination protection are irrelevant.
