Greens Push for More Police Presence and Security Powers Amid Concerns Over Hybrid Threats

Felix Banaszak, the Green Party leader, recently told the Süddeutsche Zeitung that he desires a stronger police presence at train stations. He criticized the decision made by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to reassign a significant number of federal police officers from these locations to the border, arguing that this move was incorrect and resulted in a drop in overall security protection elsewhere.

According to the newspaper, this initiative signals a new strategic direction for the Greens. They aim to intensify their focus on security concerns, addressing a perceived general feeling of unease among the public by placing safety issues at the center of their political agenda. Banaszak stated his intent to change the perception that the Greens are not sufficiently handling the issue of security, thereby challenging a core policy field of the ruling Union coalition.

Furthermore, Banaszak raised alarms regarding escalating threats, particularly mentioning hybrid attacks emanating from Russia, such as the recent phishing attack on Signal. He declared that “Putin has declared us enemies” warning that both security and democracy in Europe are at risk. Consequently, the Greens are advocating for a rapid reform of the state intelligence services and demanding expanded powers for these agencies. Banaszak urged that the BND (Federal Intelligence Service) and the Verfassungsschutz (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution) require better support-technically, financially, and in terms of personnel. “We have no time to waste” he warned, adding that if Dobrindt had been a full-time Federal Interior Minister, these issues would be tackled quickly.

Personally, Banaszak took the warnings about wiretapping and eavesdropping extremely seriously, noting that for some private conversations, his mobile phone is now kept in a side room.
